Keeping high tech in check
Article Abstract:
Most credit offices have long discarded their file cabinets and other antiquated equipment in favor of sophisticated technology, including voice response, interactive workstations, multi-session terminals and user-friendly screens. When adopting technology, credit grantors would do well to assess the needs of the organization and make these the basis for choosing any new system. The introduction of high techology in the workplace necessitates certain changes in personnel management. Among these changes are the need for personnel to gain an understanding of how the technology functions and be equipped with decision-making skills so that they can add value to decision systems. Constant innovations in technology require continuous discussions on the issue of managing technology, as well as managing the people in a high technology environment.

The frontiers of sleep
Article Abstract:
The Strasbourg meeting, held to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Human Frontier Science Program, was a venue for discussing new developments in the field of sleep research. Among the topics discussed were the description of the electrophysiological correlates of sleep and waking at the single cell level. The meeting, instead of resolving controversies, generated its own set of questions. Delegates asked if sleep is a local or global phenomenon, if single neurons can sleep and if sleep can be investigated in cell cultures.
