A mutant Drosophila homolog of mammalian Clock disrupts circadian rhythms and transcription of period and timeless
Article Abstract:
The novel arrhythmic Drosophila mutant JRk, which is later called dClock, disrupts the circadian rhythms and cycling transcription of the per and tim genes. The mutation of the gene results in the termination of codon that truncates the protein and in turn, deletes most of the putative C-terminal activation domain. The mutant phenotype which resulted from premature halt of codon consistently reveals truncated features.

Research shows that in Drosophila the transcriptional activator, Clk, induces rhythmic gene expression in brain cells. These neurons activate the?rhythmic expression?of the cryptochrome gene, which induces and organizes the core elements of interdependent feedback loops involved in the circadian rthythms.

Research reveals that 134 cycling clock genes (Clk) constitute a global circadian gene expression in Drosophila melanogaster and other organisms. Data indicate that Clk genes are arranged in gene clusters and are co-regulated by transcription.
