A tiny helper lightens the maternal load
Article Abstract:
A study revealing a surprising and elegant solution that could help to coordinately destroy a large number of maternal mRNAs at the mid-blastula transition of early animal embryogenesis is presented. Hence, an examination on fish that lacked the miRNA processing enzyme Dicer both maternally and zygotically is presented to demonstrate that miRNAs are essential for early morphogenesis of zebrafish embryos.

Article Abstract:
A commentary is presented on the article 'Seeing Is Believing: The Bicoid Morphogen Gradient Matures' by Ephrussi, A and St. Johnston, D., appearing in the issue of 'Cell' dated January 23, 2004. The correlation between Bicoid concentration and the positional identity in the Drosophila blastoderm is discussed.
