A tripartite protein complex with the potential to couple synaptic vesicle exocytosis to cell adhesion in brain
Article Abstract:
Research seeking to identify molecules that bind to CASK, a protein related to membrane-associated guanylate kinases, has led to the identification of a novel tripartite complex. The structure of this complex shows an unexpected convergence of synaptic biochemistry with C. elegans genetics. The tripartite complex is created by the binding of Mint1 and Velis, vertebrate LIN-7 homologs, to CASK. It has now been possible to propose a model for the function of the tripartite complex in synapses.

Synaptic vesicles: An organelle comes of age
Article Abstract:
The lipid and composition of synaptic vesicles are analyzed in order to provide the stature of synaptic vesicles as a model organelle. The results have confirmed that a high number of SNARE and Rab proteins are present on synaptic vesicles, thus explaining why the deletion of the SNARE protein synaptobrevin does not completely block exocytosis.

Molecular anatomy of a trafficking organelle
Article Abstract:
A comprehensive and quantitative molecular description of synaptic vesicles (SVs) as model trafficking organelles is presented. A model is constructed that shows that SVs are dominated by proteins, posses a diversity of trafficking proteins and contain many copies of proteins essential for membrane traffic and neurotransmitter uptake.
