Activity and phylogenetic diversity of bacterial cells with high and low nucleic acid content and electron transport system activity in an upwelling ecosystem
Article Abstract:
The evaluation of whether bacteria with higher cell-specific nucleic acid content (HNA) or an active electron transport system are responsible for the bulk of bacterioplankton metabolic activity and also whether the phylogenetic diversity of HNA and CTC (5-cyano-2,3-ditolyl tertazolium chloride)-positive cells differed from the diversity of Bacteria with low nucleic acid content (LNA) are reported. The results show that LNA bacteria are not much different from HNA bacteria in either cell-specific rates of substrate incorporation or phylogenetic composition.

Reductive dechlorination of a polychlorinated biphenyl congener and hexachlorobenzene by vitamin B12
Article Abstract:
The reductive dechlorination of 2,3,4,5,6-pentachlorobiphenyl and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) by vitamin B12 wasdemonstrated in a biomimetic model system. The dechlorination of 2,3,4,5,6-pentachlorobiphenyl occured at either the para or meta chlorines. Theproducts were 2,3,5,6-tetrachlorobiphenyl and 2,3,4,6-tetrachlorobiphenyl. The products of dechlorination of HCB were pentachlorobenzene, 1,2,3,5-tetrachlorobenzene and 1,2,4,5-tetrachlorobenzene. The chlorines in thebiphenyl ring were replaced by a proton from water.

Phylogenetic analysis of polyketide synthase I domains from soil metagenomic libraries allows selection of promising clones
Article Abstract:
The PCR primers are designed in the conserved regions of the ketosynthase domain (KS) to detect type I polyketide synthases (PKSI) genes in recombinant clones from a large metagenomic soil library. The phylogenetic analysis of PKSI domains led to the detection of numerous PKSI-positive clones and the selection of two promising clones for the potential production of new compounds.
