Contribution of fungi and bacteria to leaf litter decomposition in a polluted river
Article Abstract:
The contribution of fungi and bacteria to the decomposition of alder leaves is investigated at two references and two polluted sites in the Ave River (northwestern Portugal). The leaf moss loss in fine-mesh bags, bacterial and fungal production, fungal biomass and sporulation and diversity of aquatic hyphomycetes associated with decomposing leaves are determined.

Competition between ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and benthic microalgae
Article Abstract:
The abundance, activity and diversity of ammonium-oxidizing (AOB) are analyzed in prepared microcosms with and without microphytobenthic activity. The analysis indicates that direct competitive interaction take place between algae and AOB and that benthic algae are superior competitors because they have higher N uptake rates and grow faster than AOB.

Diversity and phylogenetic affiliations of morphologically conspicuous large filamentous bacteria occurring in the pelagic zones of a broad spectrum of freshwater habitats
Article Abstract:
A study of filamentous bacteria with a conspicuous morphology found in the majority of the bacterioplankton samples from a variety of freshwater habitats is presented. The results suggest that the SOL cluster bacteria are an integral part of bacterioplankton in many freshwater habitats.
