Application of a vital fluorescent staining method for simultaneous, near-real-time concentration monitoring of two bacterial strains in an Atlantic coastal plain
Article Abstract:
Two field experiments are conducted in consecutive years (2000 and 2001) for which two strains of bacteria were labeled with vital fluorescent stains, coinjected, and tracked in a shallow coastal aquifer. The results relate specifically to the ability to simultaneously track both bacterial strains through the subsurface in near-real time and to show that microbial properties were the main determinant in the control of transport.

Development of a vital fluorescent staining method for monitoring bacterial transport in subsurface environments
Article Abstract:
Research describes development of a fluorescent labeling technique for bacteria in which the fluorophore does not affect cell transport or viability. Data reveal 5-(And 6-)-carboxyfluorescein diacetate, succinimidyl ester is an efficient and physiologically suitable label for investigating bacterial transport studies.

Archaeal diversity in waters from deep South African gold mines
Article Abstract:
Researchers have discovered archaeal communities in South African gold mines that are completely distinct from those found in other environments. The communities were phylogenetically diverse, with most members related to uncultivated species.
