Pathovar-specific requirement for the Pseudomonas syringae lemA gene in disease lesion formation
Article Abstract:
The function and conservation of the lemA gene was examined in different pathovars of Pseudomonas syringae. All strains of P. syringae pv syringae examined contained the lemA gene sequence, which in this pathovar, was required for lesion formation. The gene was also detected in six different P. syringae pathovars as well as in P. aeruginosa. However, the gene may not be required in pathogenicity in other pathovars, as was demonstrated with P. syringae pv phaseolicola, where site-exchange mutagenesis did not result in a loss of pathogenicity. The lemA gene product is probably a regulator protein.

Contribution of the regulatory gene lemA to field fitness of Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae
Article Abstract:
Field studies on two strains of Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae were conducted to determine the influence of the lemA gene on fitness in this strain. The two P. syringae pv. syringae. strains used were the wild type and the lemA mutant. Results reveal a significant contribution of the lemA gene to fitness in P. syringae on bean leaves but not on seeds. Coinoculation of the two strains made the mutants suppressive to the wild type.
