Bioavailability of sorbed 3-chlorodibenzofuran
Article Abstract:
Examination of the bioavailability of sorbed 3-chlorodibenzofuran (3CDF) for the bacteria Sphingomonas sp. strain HH19k reveals that both the specific affinity of the degrading organism and the adherence of organisms to the sorbent influence the kinetics of bioavailability. Experiments are performed using porous granules of Teflon as an artificial organic sorbent. Inhibition of radial diffusion inside the granules by sorption accounts for the rate of desorption of 3CDF.

Development and characterization of a whole-cell bioluminescent sensor for bioavailable middle-chain alkanes in contaminated groundwater samples
Article Abstract:
An Escherichia coli whole-cell biosensor was developed for linear alkane detection through the transcriptional fusion of Vibrio harveji promotorless luxAB genes and Pseudomonas oleovorans alkB promoter. Standardized and optimized assays were then employed in evaluating the biosensor strain's ability to detect octane concentrations. The biosensor was also found to be useful in estimating linear akane concentrations in groundwater samples contaminated with oil.

Bacterial phosphating of mild (unalloyed) steel
Article Abstract:
Research reveals that biofilms may be useful in the protection of steel surfaces from corrosion as indicated by steel electrodes treated with the biofilm-forming bacteria. Data show that unalloyed steel electrodes immersed in the bacterial culture display electrochemical potential activity fluctuations due to vivianite deposition, which suggests bacterial activity.
