Bacterial migration along solid surfaces
Article Abstract:
The migration rates of different strains of Escherichia coli on various gel or solid surfaces were measured using an in vitro migration system device. Four motile strains were able to migrate on a MacConkey agar/glass interface, while a nonmotile and a less motile strain were not. Relatively hydrophobic strains migrated faster than hydophilic strains. The more negatively charged strains migrated faster. Migration rates of a fast-migrating strain were not significantly different on different surfaces. Results obtained in the in vitro system demonstrated that growth in suspension and motility are the most important factors in bacterial migration on solid surfaces.

A simple procedure for isolation of cloning vectors and endogenous plasmids from viridans group streptococci and Staphylococcus aureus
Article Abstract:
A simple protocol for the isolation of pure endogenous plasmid DNA from viridans group streptococci finds application in molecular techniques like automated sequencing. This method is also useful for the isolation of plasmid from Staphylococcus aureus. The plasmid DNA helps in restriction analysis, subcloning and electrotransformations. The plasmid isolation facilitates the selection and recovery of cloned genes in gram positive bacteria for the study of endogenous plasmid.

Development of plasmid cloning vectors for Thermus thermophilus HB8: expression of a heterologous, plasmid-borne kanamycin nucleotidyltransferase gene
Article Abstract:
A recombinant plasmid carrying a gene that encodes a thermostable kanamycin nucleotidyltransferase was introduced into the Thermus thermophilis strain HB8. The gene was randomly inserted into the cryptic, multicopy plasmid of the strain HB8. Results showed that the gene was expressed in T. thermophilus and conferred resistance to kanamycin. The study indicated the suitability of T. thermophilus as a host for gene expression and plasmid vectors.
