Binding affinities and cooperative interactions with bHLH activators delimit threshold responses to the dorsal gradient morphogen
Article Abstract:
The effects of the binding affinities and cooperative interactions of signaling molecules or transcription factors in cell fate specification during development were investigated. The study protocol involved site-directed mutagenesis combined with P transformation assays. The results showed that dosage-sensitive interactions between the dorsal morphogen (dl) and basic-helix-loop-helix proteins delimit threshold responses to the dl gradient, which initiates the formation of mesoderm, neuroectoderm and dorsal ectoderm during development.

Regulation of cell proliferation by a morphogen gradient
Article Abstract:
Methods of spatial, temporal and quantitative control over gene expression are used to show that the juxtaposition of cells perceiving different levels of the Decapentaplegic (DPP) morphogen signaling is essential for medial-wing-cell proliferation. Observations demonstrate that the morphogen gradient regulates growth during development.

Seeing is believing: the bicoid morphogen gradient matures
Article Abstract:
The results of recent studies on bicoid mRNA localization are discussed. The dual role of bicoid as a transcriptions and translation factor is analyzed.
