A pre-genetic study of the isoforms of malic enzyme associated with lipid accumulation in Mucor circinelloides
Article Abstract:
A pre-genetic study has been carried out to look into which isoforms of malic enzyme are associated with Mucor circinelloides lipid accumulation. M. circinelloides is an oleaginous fungus having at least six isoforms of the enzyme, which is a key lipogenic enzyme in filamentous fungi. The study was to assess impact of a range of growth conditions known to affect malic enzyme activity in miroorganisms and to determine their effect on several activities. Amino acid sequence analysis of isoforms III and IV suggests that these two enzymes may be encoded by one gene and that isoform IV is formed from isoform II by post-translational modification started by either N-limitation, with glucose the carbon source, or growth on acetate as the only carbon source.

Biochemical events leading to the diversion of carbon into storage lipids in the oleaginous fungi Mucor circinelloides and Mortierella alpina
Article Abstract:
Research has been conducted on the Mucor circinelloides and Mortierella alpina. The use of these bacteria as the principle model for the oleaginous filamentous fungi is described and the results indicate the difference in the biochemistry of lipid accumulation between oleaginous yeasts and oleaginous filamentous fungi.

Malic enzyme is a major source of NADPH for lipid accumulation by Aspergillus nidulans
Article Abstract:
Spectrophotometric assays were done to estimate the enzyme activities of malic enzyme which have been obtained from cell extracts of Aspergillus nidulans. The results demonstrated that malic enzyme is a major source of NADPH for the synthesis of storage lipid by A. nidulans. The enzyme, however, did not appear to influence the synthesis of metabolically active lipid. There was also no evidence of its role in the desaturation of fatty acids.
