The age-1 and daf-2 genes function in a common pathway to control the lifespan of Caenorhabditis elegans
Article Abstract:
The role of two genes, daf-2 and age-1, in enhancing the lifespan of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans was determined by examining their lifespan pathways. Mutations suppressed the lifespan extension of age-1 and daf-2 mutants. They also prompted the formation of dauer larva in the latter. Combination of the activities of these mutants with those of daf-16 and daf-18 extended their longevity despite the mutations. These results suggest that age-1 and daf-1 use the same lifespan pathway.

Caenorhabditis elegans mutants resistant to inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase
Article Abstract:
Genetic behavior and function of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine were examined by applying genetic and molecular analyses on synaptic transmission in Caenorhabditis elegans. The study focused particularly on inhibitor-resistant mutants of the transmitter-hydrolizing enzyme acetylcholinesterase. Mutant acetylcholine levels indicated presynaptic functions for some genes.
