The mitochondrial genomes of two nematodes, Caenorhabditis elegans and Ascaris suum
Article Abstract:
The nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial (mt) DNAs of Caenorhabditis elegans and Ascaris suum were determined and compared. The results showed that the gene arrangements of the C. elegans and A. suum mtDNAs are identical except for the relative positions of the AT regions. However, the gene arrangement observed for these organisms differed from those of other metazoans. Further sequence analysis indicated that C. elegans and A. suum diverged around 80 million years ago, close to, but before the divergence of humans and cows. Further aspects of tRNA and rRNA gene structure, codon modification and usage and evolution are discussed.

Estimates of gene flow among populations, geographic races, and species in the Ipomopsis aggregata complex
Article Abstract:
The amount of gene flow within and between different species and populations of Ipomopsis were estimated to determine the role of gene flow in speciation. The results showed that interpopulational gene flow within I. aggregata is high. Estimates on races also showed high rates of gene flow, although morphological differences were still maintained. High rates of gene flow were still apparent between different species of Ipomopsis, indicating that speciation can occur without a complete cessation of gene flow between diverging taxa.

Testing for equality of evolutionary rates
Article Abstract:
The likelihood ratio test is superior to variance-based tests for comparing the rates of evolution along the descent pathway leading to two species having different transition and transversion rates. Both tests, however, are at par in case of mutation models based on one parameter. The application of the likelihood ratio test to chloroplast sequences showed more indications of different evolutionary rates of barley than were found through other tests.
