Research into the genetic parentage of the northern water snake has revealed a variety of previously unavailable data, including high levels of multiple paternity. The benefits of hypervariable genetic markers to the study of snakes is emphasised.

Characterization of DNA microsatellite loci from a threatened snake: The Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake (Sistrurus c. catenatus) and their use in population studies
Article Abstract:
Six microsatellite DNA loci from Sistrurus c. catenatus, the eastern massasauga threatened rattlesnake species, were isolated and genetically characterized. The loci was used to provide several population-level analyses. The loci were found to be highly variable, with detected alleles ranging between four and 12, and to segregate in a Mendelian fashion. They may not evolve by a stepwise mutation model and amplify similar size sections in other snake species.
