Characterization of a hybrid zone between two chromosomal races of the weta Hemideina thoracica following a geologically recent volcanic eruption
Article Abstract:
A hybrid zone between two chromosomal races of the flightless nocturnal orthopterans Hemideina thoracica has been characterized following a geologically recent volcanic eruption in New Zealand. In five independent polymorphic genetic markers broadly coinciding, steep north-to-south frequency clines were seen across the zone beside a flooded crater.

Allozyme analysis of the hybrid origin of Aristaema ehimense (Araceae)
Article Abstract:
Allozyme analysis has been carried out to study the hybrid origin of Aristaema ehimense (Araceae), a jack-in-the-pulpit species of Japan. A phenogram based on allele frequencies suggests that introgression occurs between A. serratum and A tosaense, where these species are sympatric. Only limited information came from the survey of allozyme variation, so additional taxon-specific markers from A serratum and A tosaense are needed to test the hybrid origin of A. ehimense.

Chromosome races with Pliocene origins: evidence from mtDNA
Article Abstract:
Evidence from mtDNA study in weta, nocturnal flightless Orthoptera of the Anostostomatidae family, in New Zealand supports the existence of chromosome races with Pliocene origins. A genus of arboreal, herbivorous, sexually dimorphic weta is endemic to New Zealand. Both recent and earlier, Pliocene, isolation events may have been helpful in fixation of novel chromosome rearrangements. The chromosomal races may be of different ages.
