Collective bacterial dynamics revealed using a three-dimensional population-scale defocused particle tracking technique
Article Abstract:
The tracking of multiple swimming Escherichia coli cells in three spatial dimensions and at single-cell resolution is reported using a novel three-dimensional (3D) defocused particle tracking method (DPT) method. The method revealed that the smooth swimmer diffused more readily than the wild type and both the smooth swimmer and wild-type cells revealed diffusion coefficients that were at least two orders of magnitude larger than that of the tumbler.

Twin-arginine translocation of active human tissue plasminogen activator in Escherichia coli
Article Abstract:
The construction of plasmid vectors for twin-arginine translocation (Tat) translocation of recombinant proteins exhibiting more complex patterns of disulfide bond formation is reported. The results have demonstrated that the Tat system might have some inherent and unexpected benefits when compared with existing expression strategies, making it a viable alternative for biotechnology applications that hinge on protein expression and secretion.

Assessing adhesion forces of type I and type IV pili of Xylella fastidiosa bacteria by use of a microfluidic flow chamber
Article Abstract:
The adhesiveness of the bacteria Xylella fastidiosa and the roles of type I and type IV pili in attachment to a glass substratum are evaluated by using a microfluidic flow chamber in conjunction with pilus-defective mutants. The results have shown that microfluidic flow chambers are useful tools for assessing the drag forces necessary for detaching bacterial cells.
