Comparison of ileum microflora of pigs fed corn-, wheat-, or barley-based diets by chaperonin-60 sequencing and quantitative PCR
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to construct and sequence chaperonin-60 based PCR product libraries and use phylogenetic analysis to profile the microbial communities of pigs fed diets in which corn, wheat, or barley was the major cereal ingredient. The result indicates that chaperonin-60 clone libraries can be valid profiles of complex microbial communities and can be used as the basis for producing quantitative PCR assays to measure the abundance of taxa of interest.

Characterization of intestinal microbiota and response to dietary virginiamycin supplementation in the broiler chicken
Article Abstract:
The bacteria found in five different gastrointestinal tract locations in 47-day-old chickens that are fed diets excluding or including virginiamycin throughout the production cycle is characterized. These findings provide improved profiling of the composition of the chicken intestinal microbiota and indicate that microbial responses to virginiamycin are most significant in the proximal small intestine.

Streptococcus suis serotypes characterized by analysis of chaperonin 60 gene sequences
Article Abstract:
Sequencing the chaperonin 60 gene of Streptococcus suis can discriminate between serotypes better than 16S rRNA sequencing. This bacterium infects pigs but can also infect humans. A chaperonin 60 analysis of 35 serotypes showed that two probably belonged to a different species.
