Comparison of vero cell assay and PCR as indicators of the presence of verocytotoxigenic Escherichia coli in bovine and human fecal samples
Article Abstract:
Both vero cell assay (VCA) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR), when used in conjunction, complement each other as predictors of verocytotoxigenic Escherichia coli isolation from bovine and human fecal samples. VCA and PCR produce comparable proportions of positive samples. Although the two tests are correlated, the correlation is not absolute, since the two tests show disparity among the samples classified as positive.

Neutral red assay for measurement of quantitative Vero cell cytotoxicity
Article Abstract:
The use of the neutral red assay (NRA) for quantification of cytotoxicity in vero cells is evaluated and the influence of the serum component of tissue culture medium on the vero cell assay (VCA) is assessed. The NRA provides a useful adjunct to the routine VCA and is a valuable quantitative tool.

Simultaneous detection of Salmonella strains and Escherichia coli O157:H7 with fluorogenic PCR and single-enrichment-broth culture
Article Abstract:
A PCR assay for Salmonella and E. coli O157:H7 is described that can detect less than 10 CFU per gram of both in meat or feces.. It is based on the virulence genes sipB and sip C of Salmonella and a segment of the eae gene of E. coli O157:H7.
