Pulsed-light inactivation of food-related microorganisms
Article Abstract:
The utility of pulse power energization technique in reducing predetermined microbial numbers on agar surfaces was assessed on Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Bacillus cereus, Salmonella enteritidis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Results indicate that 200 light pulses with duration of approximately 100 ns reduced by up to 2 or 6 log 10 orders the bacterial cultures seeded separately on the agar surfaces.

The hemolytic enterotoxin HBL is broadly distributed among species of the Bacillus cereus group
Article Abstract:
HBL, a hemolytic enterotoxin, is broadly distributed in Bacillus cereus group species regardless of environment. The prevalence was determined in all species other than B. anthracis. PCR and Southern analysis were used with confirmation by partial sequencing of 18 strains. Consequences for food safety should be considered.
