Complete oxidation of linear alkylbenzene sulfonate by bacterial communitiesselected from coastal seawater
Article Abstract:
Bacterial communities capable of degrading linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) were isolated from coastal seawater. Analysis revealed that such communities are composed of aerobic gram-negative rods or helical bacteria. A few bacterial strains were identified that can perform the initial steps in LAS biodegradation. Specialized strains, containing specific enzymes, are present that performed the final step. Severalstrains that subsist on the metabolic products of others were also identified. These findings suggest that the LAS-degrading capability of coastal communitiesis due to an interaction of various bacterial strains.

Reductive desulfurization of dibenzyldisulfide
Article Abstract:
A mixed, methanogenic culture derived from a methanogenic sewage digestor was used for reductive degradation of dibenzyldisulfide (DBDS). The process involved the desulfurization of the intermediate product benzyl mercaptan (BMC) and the production of toluene. The reduction of DBDS was associated with biological and abiological activities while the desulfurization of BMC was associated with biological activity.

Possible interactions within a methanotrophic-heterotrophic groundwater community able to transform linear alkylbenzenesulfonates
Article Abstract:
Results demonstrate that there is an obligatory nutritional relationship between methanotrophs and heterotrophs as well as metabolic interactions aiding the transformation of the complex linear alkylbenzenesulfonate molecule. Data further suggest that such interactions of the microbial populations favored adaptation to various environmental conditions as a community.
