Impact of carbon and flooding on the metabolic diversity of microbial communities in soils
Article Abstract:
Flooding and a rise in soil carbon source do not influence the carbon and nitrogen fractions of the biomass of soil microbial community, whereas the active bacterial population and respiration rate increase. This response does not vary with soil type. But flooding and additional carbon input induce a change in the pattern of utilization of specific carbohydrates in the substrate. This results in a decreased metabolic diversity of the soil microbial community which is corroborated by Biolog microplate analysis.

Article Abstract:
The nre nickel resistance determinant from Ralstonia eutropha-like strain 31A can be expressed in many other bacteria, including members of the alpha, beta, and gamma subclasses of the Proteobacteria. The ncc determinant is only expressed in R. eutropha-like strains.

Metabolic activity of permafrost bacteria below the freezing point
Article Abstract:
Bacteria living in permanently frozen soil are still metabolically active. The log phase of growth is followed by a stationary phase, which is probably caused by the formation of diffusion barriers in thin layers of unfrozen water.
