Contribution of indole-3-acetic acid production to the epiphytic fitness of Erwinia herbicola
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the role of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) production to epiphytic fitness. A comparison of the population dynamics of the wild-type strain and an IAA-deficient mutant of this strain on leaves was performed with time after their inoculation onto plants in both field and controlled environments. Results indicate that the ratio of the population sizes of strain 299R and 299XYLE increased during active growth periods on plant tissue except when population sizes were not increasing with time.

Involvement of NarK1 and NarK2 proteins in transport of nitrate and nitrite in the denitrifying bacterium Pseudonomas aeruginosa PAO1
Article Abstract:
Two transmembrane proteins were tentatively classified as NarK1and NarK2 in the Pseudonomas genome project and hypothesized to play an important physiological role in the nitrate/nitrite transport in Pseudonomas aeruginosa. It was observed that Pseudonomas aeruginosa needed only NarK2 as a nitrate/nitrite transporter, under denitrifying conditions.

Enhanced survival of Salmonella enterica in vesicles released by a soilborne Tetrahymena species
Article Abstract:
A serovar Thompson cell labeled with the green fluorescent protein is used to examine the interaction of Salmonella enterica serovar Thompson with a soilborne Tetrahymena sp. isolate. The release of this human pathogen from Tetrahymena cells in high-density clusters enclosed in a membrane is worthy of exploring in relation to public health issues.
