Control of male sexual behavior and sexual orientation in Drosophila by the fruitless gene
Article Abstract:
The sex-determining fruitless (fru) regulatory gene of Drosophila was cloned to determine its nucleotide structure. The transcription unit of the fru gene has a length of 140 kb with three promoters and alternatively spliced transcripts. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) sequencing by reverse-polymerase chain reaction also indicated the role of the fru gene in controlling male sexual courtship behavior and sexual orientation. Furthermore, DNA sequencing indicated the role of fru protein isoforms as transcription factors with multiple DNA-binding specificities.

The regulation of the Drosophila msl-2 gene reveals a function for sex-lethal in translational control
Article Abstract:
The functional role of the Drosophila trans-acting factors that were encoded by the male-specific lethal genes or msl-2 was analyzed via mutagenesis and transgenic techniques. Analysis of mutations in the potent regulatory elements of the msl-2 UTRs indicated the synergistic activity of the sex-linked (SXL) binding sites in the 5, and 3. UTRs during SXL repression. Furthermore, neither the 5, or the 3, ends alone strongly repressed the translation of msl-2.

CYCLE is a second bHLH-PAS clock protein essential for circadian rhythmicity and transcription of Drosophila period and timeless
Article Abstract:
The innovative Drosophila clock gene, cycle (cyc), was identified, characterized and cloned to analyze its behavioral and molecular phenotype. The cyc, which exhibits little per and tim genes transcription, also has an arrhythmic behavior similar to that of the dClock gene. By cloning the cyc gene, it encodes a bHLH-PAS transcription factor which is also analogous to the dClock gene's transcription factor.
