Culture-dependent and culture-independent diversity within the obligate marine actinomycete genus Salinispora
Article Abstract:
A study is designed to explore Salinispora distributions and species diversity in marine sediments using selective cultivation methods together with cultivation independent techniques. Results reveal limited species-level diversity in sediments collected around the Bahamas, the cultivation of Salinispora from a record depth, and evidence that these bacteria are actively growing in some sediment samples while existing predominantly as spores in others.

Species-specific secondary metabolite production in marine actinomycetes of the Genus salinispora
Article Abstract:
The association between secondary metabolite production and phylogenetically distinct but closely related marine actinomycete species belonging to the genus Salinispora is reported. The structural diversity of the metabolites observed, coupled with gene probing and phylogenetic analysis, implicates lateral gene transfer as a source of the biosynthetic genes responsible for compound production.

Phylogenetic diversity of gram-positive bacteria cultured from marine sediments
Article Abstract:
A diverse assemblage of bacteria spanning 22 gram-positive families, including many that appear to represent new taxa are revealed from a series of culture-dependant experiments which are designed to assess the diversity of gram-positive bacteria in marine sediments.
