Cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor, dacapo, is necessary for timely exit from the cell cycle during Drosophila embryogenesis
Article Abstract:
The role of the dacapo (dap) gene in cell differentiation was analyzed during the embryonic development of Drosophila. The Drosophila dap gene is a p21/p27 cyclin-dependent kinase (cdk) inhibitor that regulates the activity of cyclin-cdk complexes during the G1 phase of embryonic epidermal cells. Furthermore, the gene also initiates cell arrest during the embryonic development of the peripheral and central nervous system.

gigas, a Drosophila homolog of tuberous sclerosis gene product-2, regulates the cell cycle
Article Abstract:
Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an autosomal dominant disorder leading to the widespread increase of benign tumors. The Drosophila gene gigas was found to encode a homology of TSC2, a gene mutated in half of TSC patients. Clones of gigas mutant cells induced in imaginal cells differentiate normally to provide adult structures. However, the cells in these clones are bigger and repeat S phase without entering M phase.

The Drosophila tuberous sclerosis complex gene homologue restrict cell growth and cell proliferation
Article Abstract:
Drosophila mutant cells containing Tsc1 and Tsc2 genes, although not inhibited in their mitotic process, exhibit shorter G1 phase of the cell cycle. The genes also restrict cell growth and proliferation.
