Detection of Renibacterium salmoninarum, the causative agent of bacterial kidney disease in salmonid fish, from pen-cultured coho salmon
Article Abstract:
The presence of Renibacterium salmoninarum in pen-cultured coho salmon and nearby fishes was determined through immunological techniques. R. salmoninarum is the causative agent of bacterial kidney disease (BKD) among salmonid fish. The bacterium was present in 36.7% of the caught coho salmon, while one greenling and six flathead samples also tested positive for the pathogen. The bacterium was also detected in scallop samples hung from the edge of the net pen. The results indicate that BKD can be horizontally transmitted in seawater.

Nutrient requirements of Renibacterium salmoninarum on agar and in broth media
Article Abstract:
The nutritional requirements of Renibacterium salmoninarum, the causative agent of bacterial kidney disease of salmonid fishes, were investigated. The results showed that, R. salmoninarum could grow well under well-aerated conditions in broth media containing 1% peptone, 1% yeast extract and 0.1% L-cysteine. Serum or charcoal were required for optimum growth on solid media.

Identification of a third msa gene in Renibacterium salmoninarum and the associated virulence phenotype
Article Abstract:
The third msa gene in Renibacterium salmoninarum is characterized and an associated virulence phenotype is identified. The phenotype associated with the msa3 locus and its nonuniform distribution may contribute to observed differences in virulence among R. salmoninarum isolates.
