Detection of small numbers of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli cells in environmental water, sewage, and food samples by a seminested PCR assay
Article Abstract:
Small numbers of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli cells have been detected in environmental water, sewage and food samples using a seminested PCR assay. Water and sewage samples were filtered, while the filters were enriched overnight in a nonselective medium. The approach proved effective for specific detection of Campylobacter jejuni or Campylobacter coli in drinking water as well as environmental water, sewage and food samples with high concentrations of background organisms.

Physiological characterization of viable-but-nonculturable Campylobacter jejuni cells
Article Abstract:
The physiological properties of viable-but-nonculturable (VNBC) cells of Campylobacter jejuni Bf, 79 and 85 strains have been studied. C. jejuni is a pathogenic, gram-negative and mesophilic bacterium. The VNBC forms of the three strains were investigated using 5-cyano-2,3-ditolyl tetrazolium chloride-4',6-diamino-2-phenylindole staining. Results indicated a considerable increase in cell volume after 48 hours of culture on Columbia agar and 1 to 30 days of incubation in microcosm water.

Effect of preslaughter events on prevalence of Camplyobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli in market-weight turkeys
Article Abstract:
The effects of events that occur prior to slaughter, such as loading, transport, and holding at an abattoir, on the prevalence of Campylobacter species were examined. A statistically significant increase in the overall prevalence of Campylobacter species was observed for cloacal swabs obtained from farm 3 following transport.
