Differential amplification of rRNA genes by polymerase chain reaction
Article Abstract:
The isolation and amplification of rRNA genes using the polymerase chain reaction is now a standard techinque to study the phylogeny and population structure of microbial communities. However, selective amplification of certain sequences may introduce bias in the analysis. This was demonstrated when a PCR analysis was carried out on a DNA mixture containing DNA from hyperthermophilic archaebacteria. The results showed that the rDNA of the thermophilic bacteria are less amenable to DNA amplification. However, this limitation may be minimized by maximizing the conditions for template denaturation and primer annealing.

Culture-independent analysis of indomethacin-induced alterations in the rat gastrointestinal microbiota
Article Abstract:
An rRNA-based analysis of the impact of administration of indomethacin on the microbiota of the gastrointestinal tract and regional lymph nodes in a rat model system were conducted. It demonstrated that organisms closely related to Enterococcus faecalis were heavily enriched in the small intestine and mesenteric lymph nodes of the treated rats.

Microbial community biofabrics in a geothermal mine adit
Article Abstract:
The biological and mineralogical property of mat-like biofabrics in two different types of speleothems was examined. Results concluded that biofabrics helps vastly in speleothem formations.
