Distribution and properties of fructosyl amino acid oxidase in fungi
Article Abstract:
The Aspergillus, Fusarium, Gibberella, and Penicillium genera contain fructosyl amino acid oxidase. The substrate specificity of the enzyme against fructosyl valine and N(super epsilon)-fructosyl N(super alpha)-Z-lysine is different in different fungi. Penicillium janthinellum AKU3413 contains a fructosyl valine-specific monomeric enzyme. The enzyme is most active at 25 degree celsius and 7.5 pH. It contains a flavin adenine dinucleotide bound covalently as a prosthetic group. The purified enzyme shows two absorption peak at 366 and 448 nm which is typical of flavin compounds.

Purification and properties of methyl formate synthase, a mitochondrial alcohol dehydrogenase, participating in formaldehyde oxidation in methylotrophic yeasts
Article Abstract:
Methyl formate synthase (MFS), which catalyzes the oxidation of formaldehyde to methyl formate, was purified and characterized from Candida boidinii and Pichia methanolica. The purified MHS from the two species of methylotrophic yeasts was linked by nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) to alcohol dehydrogenase in the mitochondria. The enzyme was also characterized as a class III alcohol dehydrogenase which catalyzed methyl formate synthesis in a reaction mixture containing methanol, formaldehyde and NAD+ substrates.

Bioconversion of 7-aminocephalosporanic acid by intact Rhodotorula glutinis cells
Article Abstract:
Strains of the yeast Rhodotorula glutinis convert 7-aminocephalosporanic acid (7-ACA) to deacetyl-7-ACA (7-ADACA) when grown on enrichment medium containing ACA as the sole carbon source. The yeast cells contain a highly active 7-ACA deacetylase. The cells also convert monochloroacetyl-7-ACA to monochloroacetyl-7-ADACA. The reverse conversion of 7-ADACA to 7-ACA is seen in the presence of a methyl acetate as an acetyl donor in the medium. 7-ACA and 7-ADACA are important intermediates in the production of antibiotics.
