Distribution of environmental mycobacteria in Karonga District, Northern Malawi
Article Abstract:
The distribution of mycobacteria was investigated in the context of individuals to various mycobacterial antigens in Karonga District, northern Malawi, where epidemiological studies had indicated that people might be exposed to different mycobacterial species in the northern and southern part of the district. The results revealed that the complex pattern for the environmental mycobacterial flora but identified no clear difference between the northern and southern parts of Karonga District.

Development and application of a new method to extract bacterial DNA from soil based on separation of bacteria from soil with cation-exchange resin
Article Abstract:
A new method of obtaining bacterial deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) from soil samples using cation-exchange resin to extract the bacteria has been proven to yield bacterial DNA pure enough for further processing. Survival rates of Pseudomonas cepacia grown in two types of soil were estimated with DNA extracted using the new method. These were found to be compatible with rates calculated from growth of the bacterium in selective media.

Strong impact on the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-degrading community of a PAH-polluted soil but marginal effect on PAH degradation when priming with bioremediated soil dominated by mycobacteria
Article Abstract:
The investigation related to the possibility of priming polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) degradation in soil by adding 2% of bioremediated soil with a high capacity for PAH degradation is presented.
