Electrophoretic mobilities of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and wild-type Escherichia coli strains
Article Abstract:
The electrophoretic mobilities (EPMs) of a number of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and wild-type E. coli strains were measured. EPM is the rate of movement of a particle when placed in an electric field. The impacts of pH and ionic strength on the surface charges of both E. coli types of strains were also investigated. Findings showed that the EPMs of E. coli O157:H7 strains differed from those of wild-type strains. As the suspension pH decreased, the EPMS of both types of strains increased.

Inactivation of Escherichia coli by titanium dioxide photocatalytic oxidation
Article Abstract:
The inactivation of pure cultures of Escherichia coli in a titanium dioxide (TiO2) photoreactor was determined. TiO2 in the anatase crystalline form was used as a photocatalyst to generate hydroxyl radicals. Rapid cell death was observed in a natural water sample in the absence of inorganic-radical scavengers. The results suggest that TiO2 photocatalysis may be a viable process for disinfection of bacteria in water treatment systems.

Occurrence of antibiotic-resistant uropathogenic Escherichia coli clonal group A in wastewater effluents
Article Abstract:
The prevalence and characteristics of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMZ) resistant Escherichia coli and clonal group A (CGA) strains in domestic sewage samples collected from various locations throughout the United States are examined. A wide diversity of resistance profiles and somatic antigens were exhibited by the CGA isolates.
