Eomesodermin, a key early gene in Xenopus mesoderm differentiation
Article Abstract:
The eomesodermin (Eomes) T-domain gene of Xenopus is a panmesodermal gene that initiates the cascade of gene-mediated signals for mesodermal cell differentiation. Amino acid sequencing of the eomes gene indicated the presence of stop codons in three open reading frames in the 5prime region of the gene's cytoplasmic deoxyribonucleic acid. The Eomes gene which is activated by mesoderm-inducing growth factors promotes the transcription of early mesodermal genes. Furthermore, the cell contact is required for the activation of Eomes gene in embryos.

Expression cloning of Siamosis, a Xenopus homeobox gene expressed in dorsal-vegetal cells of blastulae and able to induce a complete secondary axis
Article Abstract:
Siamois, a novel Xenopus homeobox-containing gene, might help in the formation of the Nieuwkoop centre. Siamois mRNA is active after the midblastula transition and present in the dorsal endoderm of early gastrulae. The gene is active in the embryo cells and forms a secondary axis when injected in a vegetal-ventral blastomere with 5pg of the siamois mRNA. The progeny do not show the development of the secondary axis formation.

The interpretation of position in a morphogen gradient as revealed by occupancy of activin receptors
Article Abstract:
Morphogenesis during embryogenesis requires the activation of various genes. The development of mesodermal tissues in the Xenopus blastula is regulated by activin, a morphogen that induces the differential activation of various mesodermal genes in a concentration-dependent manner. The concentration gradient of this morphogen is sensed by the differentiating cell through the absolute number of occupied receptors.
