Evidence for a correlation between auxin production and host plant species among strains of Pseudomonas syringae subsp. savastanoi
Article Abstract:
A total of 131 strains of Pseudomonas syringae subsp savastanoi were examined for indole acetic acid (IAA) production. Detectable levels of IAA were found only from strains isolated from jasmine, phillyrea, oleander, privet and olive. Of the 33 strains isolated from ash knots, only two produced IAA and the ash strains were found to be specific on ash. DNA hybridization tests showed that the iaa genes were present in all strains except for the 31 ash strains that were unable to produce IAA. The iaa genes present in the two ash strains were presumably transfered from an oleander strain.

Correlative association between resident plasmids and the host chromosome in a diverse Agrobacterium soil population
Article Abstract:
The composition of an Agrobacterium soil population and the type of plasmids associated with the host bacterium were examined. The soil in a field which had not been cultivated for 5 years harbored a population of agrobacteria estimated at 3 x 10(super 7) colony forming unit per g. On the basis of opine metabolism, pathogenicity and agrocin sensitivity, the type of plasmid maintained was correlated with the chromosome of the bacterial host.
