Ex vivo protocol for testing virus survival on human skin: experiments with herpesvirus 2
Article Abstract:
An ex vivo protocol shows that the half life of the pathogenic human herpesvirus 2 at the physiological skin temperature of 32 degree celsius (C) is 1.44 hours while on metal disks it is 0.36 hours. The viruses on metal discs lose their infectivity at 22 degree C faster than those on human skin at 32 degree C. The procedure uses skin excised during plastic surgery to study virus survival. It can be used to evaluate the germicidal activity of handwashing agents and determine the antimicrobial activity of new compounds during product development.

Chemical disinfection to interrupt transfer of rhinovirus type 14 from environmental surfaces to hands
Article Abstract:
The activity of four commercially available products (Lysol spray, bleach, quarternary ammonium and phenol-based product) in interrupting the transfer of rhinovirus type 14 on environmental surfaces to human hands were compared. The results show that certain disinfectants can interrupt the transfer of rhinoviruses from environmental surfaces to hands. However, care must be exercised in the selection of disinfectants for proper disinfection of virus spread.

Rapid screening method for mycobacterial activity of chemical germicides that uses Mycobacterium terrae expressing a green fluorescent protein gene
Article Abstract:
Introducing the green fluorescent gene into Mycobacteria can reduce the turnaround time for tests of chemical germicides from four weeks or more to seven days or less. Most mycobacterial germicides are tested against bacterial cultures.
