Expression of the exoY gene, required for exopolysaccharide synthesis in Agrobacterium, is activated by the regulatory ros gene
Article Abstract:
Mutations in the ros gene of Agrobacterium radiobacter were found to reduce the expression of the exoY gene. A model to explain the complementation of some exo alleles by both ros and exoY genes is shown. TnphoA insertions into exoY which expressed alkaline phosphatase activity were isolated and mapped, attesting the membrane position of the exoY gene product. Some of these mutations were dominant, causing merodiploids to be non-mucoid. exoY is linked to two genes, one encoding an omega-aminotransferase and the other encoding an aldehyde dehydrogenase.

FNR-dependent repression of ndh gene expression requires two upstream FNR-binding sites
Article Abstract:
A combination of in vivo and in vitro techniques involving a variant of the aerobically active regulator of fumarate and nitrate reduction (FNR) was utilized to characterize the mechanisms regulating ndh gene repression. FNR-based analysis of the mechanisms mediating ndh repression in the Escherichia coli expression system indicated the presence of an FNR-mediated repression mechanism . The FNR variant also repressed the expression of the gene ndh in Escherichia coli under anaerobic conditions.

Intraclonal mating in Trypanosoma brucei is associated with out-crossing
Article Abstract:
The presence of mating type genetic exchange barriers in Trypanosoma brucei was analyzed during six inter- and three intraclone mating experiments. Three out of the six Trypanosoma mating experiments produced a double drug-resistant progeny which was produced by trypanosomes derived from the salivary glands of flies. Furthermore, intraclone mating occurred only during sexual reproduction among heterologous trypanosomes which was triggered by the recognition of non-self between the clones.
