Expression of the maize MnSod (Sod3) gene in MnSOD-deficient yeast rescues the mutant yeast under oxidative stress
Article Abstract:
Sod2d, a yeast strain deficient in the MnSOD isozyme of superoxide dismutase (SOD) offer a potential bioassay for other SODs. MnSOD shields cells from the ill-effects of oxidative stress. Introduction of the maize Sod3 gene to Sod2d coupled with the proper expression of the gene and formation of homoteramers restores the superoxide dismutase function of the cells and render them resistant to oxidative stress due to paraquat. Deletion studies indicate that the eight initial amino acid residues of MnSOD is required for proper localization of the enzyme in mitochondria.

Cis and Trans interactions between the iab regulatory regions and abdominal-A and Abdominal-B in Drosophila melanogaster
Article Abstract:
Analysis of the complementation between mutations in Abdominal-A (Abd-A) transcription unit in cis reveals the occurrence of two strange types of regulation by the infra-abdominal (iab) elements. The iab elements are found in the bithorax complex of Drosophila melanogaster and regulate the transcription of Abd-A and Abd-B homeotic genes in cis. The iab trans regulation is not affected by chromosomal rearrangements. These iab elements are also capable of activating the promoters and Abd-B transcription units.

Isolation and characterization of regulatory mutants from Schizosaccharomyces pombe involved in thiamine-regulated gene expression
Article Abstract:
An investigation was conducted to isolate mutants identifying genes involved in thiamine-regulated gene expression. The resulting mutants identified the genes tnr1, tnr2 and tnr3 which are negative regulators, and thi1, which is a positive regulator. All the tnr and thi alleles are recessive, while the thi loci is epistatic over tnr genes. The results demonstrate the complexity of the regulation of the S. pombe thiamine biosynthetic pathway.
