Further identification of homologous genes in Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) and T. freemani hinton (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) through hybridization
Article Abstract:
Hybridization proved useful in identifying two homologous genes in Tribolium castaneum (CS) and Tribolium freemani (FR). The genes are new mutants affecting body color. A third mutant, scar (sc), has also been found in CS and FR. It was found to be dominant at 24 degrees C and recessive at 33 degrees C in both species. The gene also showed a complete lack of expression at 33 degrees C in both CS and FR, while it showed 70% to 80% expression at room temperature. It is tentatively hypothesized that sc in FR and sc in CS are homologous genes.

Crossover suppressors in Tribolium castaneum
Article Abstract:
Screening for crossover suppression is an efficient method for detecting chromosome rearrangements in the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum. The method identifies translocations and inversions, and indicates that crossover suppression is linked with normal fertility and development in Tribolium. Suppression enhances the resolution of the genomic map of Tribolium. The crossover suppressors act as balancer chromosomes in screens for new mutations and molecular markers.
