Genetic and molecular characterization of the Caenorhabditis elegans spermatogenesis-defective gene spe-17
Article Abstract:
A study examined two self-sterile mutations that dictate the spermatogenesis-defective gene spe-17 influences unc-22, and they do not complement each other for Unc-22 and spermatogenesis faults. These mutations are deficiencies (hcDfl and hDfl3) that influence more than one transcription unit. The sequencing of spe-17 DNAs revealed that the deduced 142 amino acid protein sequence is extremely charged and rich in serine and threonine, but exhibits no major homology to any previously identified protein sequence.

The fog-3 gene and regulation of cell fate in the germ line of Caenorhabditis elegans
Article Abstract:
The fog-3 gene, which is essential for the differentiation of germ cells into sperms and oocytes, is identified and characterized in Caenorhabditis elegans. It acts on the germ cells at the end of the regulatory hierarchy which controls the germ line sex determination. The sexual identity of tissues near the germ-cells are not affected by the mutations occurring in fog-3.
