Genetic diversity in the lactose operons of Lactobacillus helveticus strains and its relationship to the role of these strains as commercial starter cultures
Article Abstract:
Two novel insertion sequence elements, ISLhe1 and ISLhe15, are situated upstream of the genes encoding the beta-galactosidase enzyme in Lactobacillus helveticus commercial starter strains. The strains with the IS982 family element, ISLhe1, have demonstrated a reduced beta-galacrosidase activity when compared to the Lactobacillus helveticus type strain, whereas strains with the ISLhe15 element have expressed beta-galactosidase in the absence of lactose.

Molecular characterization of two lactate dehydrogenase genes with a novel structural organization on the genome of Lactobacillus sp. strain MONT4
Article Abstract:
Two lactate dehydrogenase (ldh) genes from Lactobacillus sp. strain MONT4 that are cloned by complementation in Escherichia coli DC1368 (ldh pfl) and are sequenced is reported. The sequence study indicated a novel genomic organization of the ldh genes. Northern blot analysis performed to study the expression of the ldh genes as a function of growth using three probes indicated that the genes are monocistronic.

Nucleotide sequence of plasmid pCNB1 from comamonas strain CNB-1 reveals novel genetic organization and evolution for 4-Chloronitrobenzene degradation
Article Abstract:
The nucleotide sequence of a new plasmid pCNB1 from Comamonas sp. strain CNB-1 that degrades 4-chloronitrobenzene (4CNB) is determined. It is suggested that the gene deletion and acquisition as well as genetic rearrangement of DNA molecules happened during the evolution of the 4CNB degradation pathway on pCNB1.
