Genetic diversity within provenance and cultivar germplasm collections versus natural populations of pecan
Article Abstract:
Genetic diversity of crops is important to ensure that both wild and cultivated variants have a healthy long term future. A new study uses allozyme loci to investigate the genetic diversity of germplasm and cultivar collections of pecan (Carya illinoinensis) and whether it is similar to that found in natural populations. The study concludes that the number of alleles found in the wild and provenance populations are similar but cultivars are missing several low-frequency alleles.

Spatial and genetic structure within populations of wild American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L., Araliaceae)
Article Abstract:
Fine-scale genetic structure within eight wild populations of the medicinal plant American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L.) from the Appalachian Mountains in the southeastern United States is analyzed. Variation in fine-scale genetic structure among populations in this study indicates that spatial patterning may not be closely associated with the distribution of genetic variation.

Outcrossing rates and relatedness estimates in pecan (Carya illinoinensis) populations
Article Abstract:
Estimates of outcrossing rates for pecans have been restricted to assessments of the impact of selfing on crop yields in clonal orchards. A study used nine polymorphic allozyme loci to estimate the effective outcrossing rates for progeny arrays from 14 locations over the native range of pecan. Relatedness values suggested that most progeny within families are half sibs.
