Genetic variance in the composition of two functional groups (diazotrophs and cyanobacteria) from a hypersaline microbial mat
Article Abstract:
The study details spatial and seasonal variability in the composition of nitrogen-fixing and cyanobacterial functional groups of benthic, hypersaline microbial mat from Salt Pond, San Salvador Island, Bahamas. Composition of the nitrogen-fixing community showed significant seasonal changes related to salinity while cyanobacterial composition showed no consistent seasonal pattern and spatial change suggests that cyanobacterial composition was more insensitive to water stress.

Genetic diversity and phylogeny of toxic cyanobacteria determined by DNA polymorphisms within the phycocyanin locus
Article Abstract:
A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay that causes the amplification of a region of the phycocyanin operon, cpc gene, is suitable for the taxonomic classification of fresh-water strains of cyanobacteria. Digestion of the amplification product by restriction endonuclease of the amplification product makes possible the identification of different DNA profiles, leading to the identification of different taxonomic levels of the bacteria.

Diazotrophic diversity and distribution in the tropical and subtropical Atlantic Ocean
Article Abstract:
The molecular diversity of the nifH gene is characterized by nested PCR amplification using degenerate primers, followed by cloning and sequencing, in order to understand the structure of marine diazotrophic communities in the tropical and subtropical Atlantic Ocean. The results have shown that some diazotrophic phylotypes, specifically unicellular group A, might be common between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.
