Homoduplex and heteroduplex polymorphisms of the amplified ribosomal 16S-23S internal transcribed spacers describe genetic relationships in the "Bacillus cereus group"
Article Abstract:
Researchers have identified 73 homoduplex-heteroduplex polymorphisms among 141 strains belonging to six species of Bacillus. One major group included B. mycoides, B. weihenstephanensis, and B. pseudomycoides and the other included B. cereus, B. thuringiensis, and B. anthracis.

Nature of polymorphisms in 16S-23S rRNA gene intergenic transcribed spacer fingerprinting of Bacillus and related genera
Article Abstract:
The authors have investigated intergenic transcribed spacers between the 16S and 23S rRNA genetic loci used in PCR fingerprinting for bacterial strain discimination. The polymorphisms' molecular nature in intergenic transcribed spacer-PCR fingerprinting of low+G+C-content spore-forming Bacillus bacteria has been studied, and the results have demonstrated that homoduplex fragments amplified by PCR form both polymorphisms and heteroduplex products.

Strategy for identification of Bacillus cereus and Bacillus thuringiensis strains closely related to Bacillus anthracis
Article Abstract:
Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in the 16S-23S rRNA intergenic spacer (ITS) containing tRNA genes combined with RSI-PCR provide, a very efficient tool for the identification of strains closely related to Bacillus anthracis. This was proved when two Bacillus cereus strains and one Bacillus thuringiensis strain showed RSI-PCK profiles identical to that of Bacillus anthracis and the sequencing of the entire ITS containing tRNA genes revealed two of the strains to be identical to Bacillus anthracis.
