Homofermentative production of D- or L-lactate in metabolically engineered Escherichia coli RR1
Article Abstract:
The central fermentation metabolism of Escherichia coli can be redirected to the production of D-lactate or R-lactate. This was gleaned from a study of metabolic engineering of fermentation pathways in E coli for production of optically pure D-lactate, an indigenous fermentation product, or L-lactate, a nonindigenous fermentation product. A pta ppc mutant was able to metabolize glucose exclusively to D-lactate under anaerobic conditions, while a pta ldhA strain was able to metabolize glucose to L-lactate as the major fermentation product.

Detection of bacteriocins by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry
Article Abstract:
Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry is used for the detection of bacteriocins. A 30-s water wash of the sample on the probe is shown to be effective in removing contaminants of the analyte. The approach is utilized for rapid detection of pediocin, nisin, enterocin A and B and brochocin A and B from culture supernatants and for the detection of enterocin B throughout the purification process.
