Hydra: an out-group moves toward the center

Scientists discussed new research on Hydra at the 8th International Workshop on Hydroid Development in September, 1999. Hydra had fallen out of favor as a research subject but is now the focus of study as the closest out-group to the triploblastic metazoans.

Hydra moves! - The 4th International Workshop on Hydroid Development
Article Abstract:
The 4th International Workshop on Hydroid Development held in Gunzburg, Germany presented new research developments on the freshwater cnidarian, Hydra. These include reports on a neuropeptide, the head activator (HA), responsible for head regeneration, a Hydra mutant devoid of head sensory nerve cells essential in the activity of HA and discussions on Hydra stem cells.
