Immobilization of arsenite and ferric iron by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and its relevance to acid mine drainage
Article Abstract:
Research demonstrates that Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans tolerates arsenic as well as immobilizes arsenic from acid waters containing arsenic. Data show that arsenite coprecipitates with schwertmannite, which process removes arsenite from contaminated waters. Furthermore, A. ferrooxidans mediates coprecipitation of arsenite with ferric iron.

Diversity of microorganisms in Fe-As-rich acid mine drainage waters of Carnoules, France
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the diversity of microorganisms present in the acid waters originating from the Carnoules mine tailings which contain high concentrations of dissolved arsenic, iron and sulphate. It was observed that the bacterial diversity was low in Fe-As-rich acid mine drainage waters, in comparison with unpolluted water.

Autecology of an arsenite chemolithotroph: sulfide constraints on function and distribution in a geothermal spring
Article Abstract:
As(III) oxidation in Dragon Spring is reexamined in order to assess the potential for As(III) chemolithotrophs to inhabit the geothermal feature. The findings have shown that [H.sub.2]S is a potent inhibitor of As(III) oxidation and will affect the opportunities and population distribution of As(III) chemolithotrophs.
