Impact of dietary intake and helminth infection on diversity in growth among schoolchildren in rural south China: A four-year longitudinal study
Article Abstract:
Six transverse anthropometric, dietary and parasitological surveys of 274 schoolchildren from the Dongting Lake region in rural South China from 2001 to 2005 are conducted to examine intra-population differences in growth. The individual-based analysis of growth data for the 4-year period revealed that among the children who are undernourished at the population level the [DELTA]weight-for-age-based high-tertile group for either sex scarcely differed from the Chinese references in older ages for any growth indicators.

No difference in serum leptin concentrations between urban-dwelling Austronesians and Non-Austronesians in Papua New Guinea
Article Abstract:
Leptin, the product of the ob gene is secreted by adipocytes and acts as an afferent satiety signal that affects appetite and body weight, and in humans, the leptin level increases with adipose tissue in the body, owing to resistance to the function of leptin at the receptor or post-receptor level. A survey is conducted between urban-dwelling Austronesians and non-Austronesians in Papua New Guinea and no evidence of ethnic differences in the serum leptin concentration was found.

Cardiovascular risk factors of migrants in Port Moresby from the highlands and island villages, Papua New Guinea
Article Abstract:
The study presented focused on two genetically different rural-urban migrant groups in Papua New Guinea: Tari migrants from the highlands, and the more Westernized Balopa migrants from the islands. The Balopa males appeared to have higher risk factors for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) due to work-related stress; risk factors for CVDs were obesity for the Balopa and serum lipoproteins for the Tari; lifestyle is also considered one of the biggest risks for CVD.
