Impact of inorganic carbon availability on microcystin production by Microcystis aeruginosa PCC 7806
Article Abstract:
Batch culture experiments with the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa PCC 7806 are performed to test whether microcystins (MCYSTs) are produced in response to a relative deficiency of intracellular inorganic carbon ([C.sub.i,i]). The results have shown that MCYSTs are involved in increasing the efficiency of the adaptation of the photosynthetic apparatus to fluctuations inorganic carbon conditions in cyanobacterial cells.

High-resolution fluorometer for mapping microscale phytoplankton distributions
Article Abstract:
A new high-resolution, in situ profiling fluorometer maps fluorescence distributions with a spatial resolution of 0.5 to 1.5 mm to a depth of 70m in the open ocean. Centimeter-scale patterns for phytoplankton distributions associated with gradients exhibiting 10- to 30- fold changes in fluorescence in contrasting marine ecosystems are reported.
