Spatially resolved characterization of biogenic manganese oxide production within a bacterial biofilm
Article Abstract:
Pseudomonas putida strain MnB1, a biofilm-forming bacterial culture, was used as a model for the analysis of bacterial Mn oxidation in freshwater and soil environments. The distribution of Mn oxidation states was spatially heterogeneous within and between the clusters of bacterial cells and the scanning transmission X-ray microscopy was very useful for studying the hydrated interfaces between minerals and bacteria, particularly in cases where the structure of bacterial biofilms needs to be maintained.

Influence of an oyster reef on development of the microbial heterotrophic community of an estuarine biofilm.
Article Abstract:
Microbial alpha-diversity in biofilm communities influenced by an oyster reef and by the adjacent muddy sand bottom is discussed. Results suggest dramatic differences in habitat-specific microbial diversity that have implications for overall microbial diversity within estuaries.
