Selection of specific endophytic bacterial genotypes by plants in response to soil contamination
Article Abstract:
Researchers show that plant roots can recruit bacteria that have genes to degrade specific chemicals when that chemical is present in soil. In soils containing various contaminants, the concentration of bacterial genes inside plant roots that could degrade those chemicals was between 2 and 14 times higher than it was in the surrounding soil.

Impact of seasonal variations and nutrient inputs on nitrogen cycling and degradation of hexadecane by replicated river biofilms
Article Abstract:
Research has been conducted on replicated river biofilms cultivated in rotating annular reactors. The effect of seasonal variations and nutrient inputs on biofilms' genetic compositions and physiological activities has been investigated via the use of physiological and molecular biology techniques.

Biodegradation of variable-chain-length alkanes at low temperatures by a psychrotrophic Rhodococcus sp
Article Abstract:
The Rhodococcus sp. strain Q15 is a psychotrophic bacteria isolated from Lake Ontario in Canada. Characterization of the strain demonstrated its ability to degrade and mineralize n-alkanes and diesel fuel at low temperatures. In an effort to determine the strain's alkane catabolic pathway, biochemical and genetic analyses were then conducted. Polymerase chain reaction revealed that Q15 possesses an aliphatic aldehyde dehydrogenase gene. Although this gene could play a possible role in alkane degradation, additional research on the subject is still needed.
